Servings: 1 1.5 lb Loaf
Course: Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 C warm water
  • 2 T butter softened
  • 3 C bread flour
  • ¼ C light brown sugar
  • 2 T ground cinnamon
  • 1 ½ tsp. kosher salt
  • 2 ½ tsp. bread machine yeast
  • 1 C raisins

Equipment

  • Bread Machine

Method

  1. Put all the above ingredients in the bread machine bowl (except the raisins). I place mine in the order above. However, I recommend following your manufacturers directions.
  2. My machine has a dispenser for the raisins. This clicks into my machine so I don’t need to think about them. If you don’t have this, add them in on the “add in” beep.
  3. Select basic white (what I used) or sweet cycle. I would suggest medium or light crust setting (I used medium). Press start and enjoy!

When Should You Add the Raisins?

If your bread machine has an automatic fruit and nut dispenser, add the raisins there and let the machine take care of the timing.

If your machine doesn’t have a dispenser, wait for the add-in or mix-in signal before adding the raisins. Adding them later in the kneading cycle helps keep the raisins distributed throughout the loaf instead of allowing them to become overly mashed into the dough.

Bread machines vary, so always check the instructions for your particular model.

Which Bread Machine Cycle Should I Use?

For this recipe, we use the Basic/White Bread cycle, although the Sweet Bread cycle can also work well if your machine has one.

A light or medium crust setting is a good choice. We use medium, but choose the setting you prefer based on how dark and crisp you like the outside of your bread.

Tips for the Best Bread Machine Cinnamon Raisin Bread

Check the dough during the first few minutes of kneading. Bread flour can absorb moisture differently depending on the brand, humidity, and even how the flour was measured. The dough should form a soft, smooth ball rather than looking soupy or excessively dry.

Measure your flour carefully. If you’re measuring by volume, spoon the flour into the measuring cup and level it rather than packing the flour into the cup. Too much flour is one of the easiest ways to end up with dense bread.

Follow your bread machine’s recommended ingredient order. We add the ingredients in the order listed in the recipe, but some manufacturers recommend a different order.

Don’t add the raisins too early. Use your machine’s dispenser or add-in signal when possible so the raisins stay intact and distribute throughout the loaf.

How to Serve Cinnamon Raisin Bread

This bread is wonderful while it’s still slightly warm, but it’s especially good toasted.

Try it with:

  • Butter
  • Honey butter
  • Cream cheese
  • Peanut butter
  • Apple butter
  • A drizzle of honey

It also makes excellent cinnamon raisin French toast. If you have a few slices left after a couple of days, French toast is one of our favorite ways to use them.

Storage and Freezing

Allow the bread to cool completely before storing it. Keep it in an airtight container or bread bag at room temperature for several days.

For longer storage, cinnamon raisin bread freezes very well. Slice the loaf first, place the slices in a freezer-safe bag or container, and freeze. That way, you can remove only the slices you need and toast them straight from frozen or allow them to thaw at room temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use golden raisins?

Absolutely. Golden raisins work well in this recipe and can be substituted for regular raisins. You could also experiment with a combination of the two.

Can I use the Sweet Bread cycle?

Yes. We use the Basic/White Bread cycle, but the Sweet Bread cycle is another good option if your bread machine offers one. Bread machines differ, so consult your manufacturer’s instructions if you’re unsure.

Why did my cinnamon raisin bread turn out dense?

Too much flour, incorrect yeast measurements, old yeast, or an improper liquid-to-flour ratio can all contribute to dense bread. Carefully measure your ingredients and take a look at the dough during the initial kneading cycle. It should develop into a soft, cohesive ball.

Can I freeze cinnamon raisin bread?

Yes. Let the loaf cool completely, slice it, and freeze the slices in a freezer-safe container or bag. Pre-slicing makes it easy to take out just one or two pieces for toast.

What can I make with leftover cinnamon raisin bread?

Besides toast, leftover cinnamon raisin bread is excellent for French toast or bread pudding. Slightly older bread can actually work particularly well for both.
